While fashionistas cram their feet into shoes too small and struggle for breath in too-tight dresses, Nicole Richie opted for comfortable chic at New York's annual Fashion Week.
Showing that style and sexiness has nothing to do with showing skin or wearing the latest designer dress, the 31-year-old stepped out on Wednesday looking like she had borrowed husband Joel Madden's jeans.

The one-time reality star turned designer blended numerous elements, create a striking ensemble with a causal but classy edge.

Setting the pace: Nicole Richie showed off her style strengths as the annual New York Fashion Week kicked off on Wednesday

The mother of five-year-old daughter Harlow and son Sparrow, three, donned a pair of oversized boyfriend style jeans, which she wore folded up at the angle and slung low over her hips.
While the loose jeans highlighted the star's slender frame, Nicole balanced out her proportions by wearing a black T-shirt tucked into the pants and a long flowing paisley silk jacket.

Ensuring the jeans didn't make her look too casual - a faux pas during fashion week - Nicole added a pair of black and white stilettos that featured this season's on-trend pointed toe.
Despite being an accessories designer, Nicole largely shunned adding any to her outfit, except for a pair of oversized black cats eye sunglasses by her label House of Harlow 1969.

The event - which kicks off Fashion Week - will see Kate Upton be crowned the 2013 Model Of The Year.

Nicole's outfit on Wednesday stayed true to her style ideals, once telling The Times: 'I’ve always been one to dress for comfort.
'Becoming a mother hasn’t changed my style. My staples are a good pair of opaque black tights, so you can wear your summer dresses in the winter.
'And, in terms of footwear, I am 5ft 1in and I do enjoy wearing heels a lot.'
Nicole was clearly looking forward to the Style Awards, tweeting a photograph of herself wearing a turban and robe alongside the caption: 'Good morning New York. Lets get started!'
