'It's hard to imagine unstoppable energy
stopped:' Streep remembered the comedic genius, who died of a suspected
suicide on Monday aged 63
'He was such a generous soul,' she continued.
'I
never worked with him,' the Oscar winner said, 'but he was a great
friend of [late
Superman actor] Chris and Dana Reeve and I think he was
Chris's roommate at Julliard and he was always very loyal to them and their foundation.'The star of Good Will Hunting, Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs Doubtfire, who battled depression and an addiction to cocaine and alcohol for decades, was found 'unconscious and not breathing' in his mansion just outside San Francisco at around noon on Monday.
Marin County Sheriff's Office said it believed Williams' death was a suicide due to asphyxia - reportedly by hanging - and an autopsy with toxicology tests will be carried out later on Tuesday.
Moving
on from he tragic topic, Streep went on to talk about her latest
project, The Giver, in which she stars alongside Jeff Bridges, Alexander
Skarsgard and Katie Holmes.
'I hope
that's not our future,' she said of the dystopian world that is the
backdrop to the sci-fi flick. 't's sort of hard to imagine that it could
be.'
'It's a
very controlled,' she explained. 'The reason I don't think it's our
future is because it's so controlled and if anything I think our world
is spinning out of control and is in danger of chaos.'
Lauer then asked whether her hair in the film -long locks of iron grey - helped her to get into character.
'I
think I just imagined being in charge,' she responded. 'The hair... it
was difficult to imagine a woman being in charge and they wouldn't
colour their hair!'
Asking about her family, Lauer revealed that Jeff Bridges told him Streep had been a soccer mom.
'He was such a generous soul:' While Meryl never
worked with Robin, she recalled his friendship with the late Superman
actor Christopher Reeve
A different look: Meryl Streep plays Chief Elder in The Giver
'I was not allowed to make a sound - ever!' the mother-of-four laughed at the memory.
Streep
also spoke of her relationship with her daughters, particularly
actresses Grace ad Marmie, whom she is set to appear with on screen.
'We're
playing people who are very estranged and we're very close, so it's not
going to be very helpful to pull on our relationship,' she said of their
roles in Ricki And The Flash, which follows an aging rocker who is
trying to reconnect with his estranged family.
On her daughters' choice to become actresses, Meryl said: 'I
think their eyes were open all the time they were growing up and they
saw all the good stuff and all the whining - because home is where you
bring all the whining. They have seen the stuff that's difficult about
being famous.'
However,
when asked if there was going to be a sequel to the hit Anne Hathaway
vehicle Devil Wears Prada, Streep quickly replied: 'I don't think so.'
Industry veterans: While Meryl and Robin had
never worked together, they were both involved with the Christopher and
Dana Reeve Foundation and were pictured together at a foundation event
in 2007
Tragic: Meryl looked back on Williams friendship
with the late Superman actor Christopher Reeve - the pair had been
