'Our destiny lies above us': Teary-eyed Matthew McConaughey prepares to head to outer space in Christopher Nolan's cryptic Interstellar teaser trailer

Matthew McConaughey and director Christopher Nolan tackle wormholes, time travel, and alternate universes in Interstellar.

Paramount Pictures debuted a cryptic teaser for the sci-fi flick - due for release in 2014 - before The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug this weekend.

The 90-second trailer - helmed by the mind-bending filmmaker behind Memento and Inception - consisted of McConaughey's voice over old NASA footage.

'We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible,' the 44-year-old Texan pondered.
'And we count these moments, these moments when we dared to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that.'

The Magic Mike stud continued: 'And perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers and we've barely begun. And that are greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, as our destiny lies above us.'

Interstellar's teaser hints at rumoured themes of dying agriculture and the search for more fertile lands off in space.

The IMAX flick - shot in Iceland, Canada, and LA - also stars Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, John Lithgow, and Ellen Burstyn.
It's the British director's first film since his massive hit, The Dark Knight Rises, last year.

Meanwhile, McConaughey has been receiving Oscar buzz ever since dropping 50 pounds to play HIV-positive drug smuggler Ron Woodruff in The Dallas Buyer's Club.

Matthew will battle Tom Hanks, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Robert Redford, and Idris Elba at the Golden Globe Awards airing January 12 on NBC.
The father-of-three will also compete against Hanks, Ejiofor, Forest Whitaker, and Bruce Dern at the SAG Awards airing January 18 on TNT and TBS.

'With thanks and respect, I'm honored with this nomination,' the Dazed & Confused star said of his SAG nod in an official statement.

McConaughey will next appear with Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's real-life crime-drama The Wolf of Wall Street - due out Christmas.

He also stars opposite Woody Harrelson in the eight-episode series True Detective, which premieres January 12 on HBO.
