Michael Douglas' petition to see incarcerated son deleted from campaign website... after organisers declare they won't give 'special treatment to a celebrity'

Michael Douglas and his ex- wife Diandra Luker have just experienced a setback in their fight to see their incarcerated son Cameron Douglas.
The concerned parents had a petition posted on Change.org to urge prison officials to grant them access to Cameron, who is currently serving out two years of solitary confinement out of a five year prison sentence.
But the campaign was taken down from the site on Tuesday, reportedly due to petition organisers not wanting to give special treatment to a movie star.

Due to his son currently serving out a special sentence in solitary confinement, Douglas has not been able to see Cameron in over a year.

According to TMZ the Drug Policy Alliance, which organised the petition for the incarcerated young man, was responsible for deleting the online campaign.

The group's mission is to enact prison reform but felt that by giving special prominence to the veteran Hollywood star's unfortunate situation they would send the wrong signal.
The group's focus is on structural reform and usually does not emphasise individual cases.
The DPA is said to have also been concerned that it would send the wrong message by highlighting a celebrity case when there are innumerable similar cases of less high profile individuals.
The 68-year-old star and his former spouse Diandra are desperate to be reunited with Cameron, who is being held in solitary confinement at the Federal Corrections Institute in Cumberland, Maryland, for drug offences.
Diandra is reported to have emailed high-profile friends including Calvin Klein, Yoko Ono, Bianca Jagger and Bo Derek, asking them to get behind a petition campaigning for them to see their troubled offspring.
According to PageSix.com, Diandra wrote in an email: ‘We have not seen our son for over a year, and the government is telling us we cannot see our son for TWO YEARS.
Cameron has also been in solitary confinement for TWO YEARS! (For a non violent crime of possession). As parents we are fighting back.

‘Our son Cameron has been sentenced to 9 yrs., the longest sentence ever handed out by the Federal Government for a non violent crime of possession. PLEASE help us by forwarding this petition after signature, to anyone you know who would like to help the cause. (sic)’

The email - which is also addressed to Bob Pittman, Carolina Herrera, Deborah Norville, Ann Dexter-Jones, Frederic Fekkai, Donna Karan Charlie Rose and Diane von Furstenberg - concluded with a link to the now defunct Change.org petition.

Initially, activist Tony Papa of the Drug Policy Alliance, who is acting as an advocate for Cameron, 34, started the petition on Change.org as he believes Michael is being unfairly punished for his son's addiction.

Michael took aim at the American prison system during his acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards last month.

He said: ‘If you happen to have a slip - this is for a prisoner who is non-violent - as about a half a million of our drug addicted prisoners are, they punish you.

‘So for my son's case, he's spent almost two years in solitary confinement and right now I'm being told that I cannot see him for two years.’

Cameron was handed a five-year sentence for heroin possession and conspiracy to distribute narcotics in 2009, which was extended by four and a half years in 2011 after he committed drug infractions behind bars, meaning he is due to be released in 2018.
