Oil be back! Arnold Schwarzenegger takes a trip out in his VERY green car

He's best known as a supertough action man in the movies, but in real life Arnold Schwarzenegger has another gentler, and much greener, side to him.
That was clearly in evidence when he took his beloved green Hummer out for a spin in Los Angeles. The one-of-a-kind vehicle actually runs on vegetable oil.
Back when he was running California the former bodybuilder liked to consider himself 'The Green Governor'.

In 2006 he gave up six of his seven Hummers, thought to be worth around a million dollars, in a bid to work towards saving the environment.
He kept just one of the them, which he then converted to run as a hybrid vehicle. 'They are hydrogen engines and bio-fuel engines and one is being changed into an electrical engine,' Schwarzenegger noted to The Telegraph about his former fleet of green-friendly vehicles on a visit earlier this year with the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.

Rather than shame people into cutting their consumption, Arnold insists that 'we should let them know they can be part of the solution by changing the technology in that car'.
The green hummer certainly garners plenty of attention every time Arnie takes it out, even if it's just for a run to his favourite local LA restaurant.

Among some of the other green achievements he made when he still in office, Arnie signed a bill creating the US' first cap on greenhouse gas emissions.
He also signed a second global warming bill prohibiting large utilities and corporations in the state of California from making long-term contracts with suppliers who do not meet the state's greenhouse gas emission standards.
In 2011 he founded the R20 Regions of Climate Action which aims to develop a sustainable, low carbon economy. Yet it's the steps he has taken to reduce his own personal carbon footprint that have won him the most praise.
Besides the adaption of his sole remaining Hummer to run on biofuels, he has installed solar panels for heating at his LA mansion.
Such is the great esteem to which he is viewed by the automotive industry that in 2009 Arnold was invited to open the SAW World Congress, which focuses on the US motor industry, in Detroit.

With his political career now in hibernation, if not limbo, Arnold has just confirmed he is going to star in a sequel to his 1988 hit Twins, tentatively dubbed Triplets.
Continuing his resurrection of titles from his 80s heyday he is set to film a third entry in the Conan The Barbarian series.
That doesn't mean Arnie has given up politics altogether though.
Last month he was lobbying hard to change a US law which forbids foreign-born citizens from running for, or holding the office of, President.
Arnold, of course, was born in Austria, but has long hankered for a chance to go all the way to the White House and become President of the United States.
