The songstress was occupying a courtside seat as the LA Clippers faced Oklahoma City Thunder i nan NBA play off when Los Angeles Police Commission President Steve Soboroff, who was seated to her immediate left, requested a photo.
But while attempting to take a selfie Rihanna dropped his iPhone onto the hard surface – damaging its protective cover in the process.
Whoops: Rihanna looks dismayed after dropping
Los Angeles Police Commission President Steve Soboroff during a
basketball match last Friday
As an act of atonement the singer, clearly embarrassed by the incident, donated $25,000 to a charity fund for police officers, but Soboroff has since placed the phone on online
auction site eBay – and bids have gone through the roof.
By Thursday evening the phone – signed by Rihanna after the accident – had reached $57,000 (£33,989).
Proceeds will be donated to the Los Angeles Police Foundation.
Up for auction: Rihanna dropped Steve's phone, with the cracked device achieving a highest bid of $57,000 (£39,989)
Never mind: Steve saw the funny side following the incident
Following the incident the
Good Girl Gone Bad singer shared a friendly Twitter exchange with Steve
afterwards, saying: 'Sorry I broke your phone @SteveSoboroff :)'And the 65-year-old kept his followers updated about developments, saying: 'BIG @rihanna news: she's donating $25,000 to @LAPoliceFdtn for cadets & families of fallen officers.'
He also revealed he was auctioning his mobile to raise more money for the good cause, after getting her to sign it of course, with the Barbadian beauty writing: 'Sorry! I ♥ LAPD. Rihanna.'
I'll do the honours: It was eventually left to Rihanna's pal, Melissa, to take the picture
