Despite his cheerful funk music that still makes everyone want to dance, James Brown had a troubled time in his youth.
And
the singer’s fraught relationship with his mother is the focus of a new
trailer for Get On Up, the upcoming biopic about one of funk’s founding
father.
James’ mother Susie, who was 16 when she gave birth to him, abandoned him as a child.
Rocky relationship: James Brown (Chadwick
Boseman) has a fraught reunion with his mother Susie (Viola Davis) in
the new trailer for upcoming biopic Get On Up
And
the trailer, released via Yahoo Movies, depicts the sad moment when
James (played by Chadwick Boseman), is reunited with his mother
(portrayed by Viola Davis),
as she tracks him down once he’s become
famous.
‘My
baby playing at the Apollo,’ Susie says proudly, but James quickly
chimes in: ‘I ain’t your baby. Not then, not now. I look out for James
Brown.’
James,
who served time at a juvenile detention centre after being convicted of
armed robbery at the age of 16, made it to the top all on his own.
All alone: James' mother abandoned him as a child but tracked him down again when he had become famous
'No one else helped me': The funk singer became hugely successful all on his own and despite a troubled past
‘No one else helped me. No one else,’ he says in an emotional portion of the drama-packed trailer.
It isn’t all doom and gloom in the clip however, as viewers are also shown James’ amazing success story.
‘You blew the roof off the place,’ a young James is told as he finds his feet. ‘You’re breaking new ground every day.’
On his own: James rejected his mother when she came back into his life because of his fame and fortune
Maternal figure: Octavia Spencer plays Jame's Aunt Honey, a madam of a brothel who gives him lots of advice
Nelsan Ellis, who plays Famous Flames member Bobby Byrd, says at one point: ‘The man’s a genius. And he’s taking us with him.’
Octavia Spencer portrays James’ Aunt Honey, a maternal figure and madam at a brothel.
During
the clip she is seen giving him lots of advice, and at one point tells
him: ‘You’ve never been down, how are you gonna get on up?’
Dark time: At the age of 16 James served time in a juvenile detention centre for armed robbery
He still gets everyone on their feet: James is considered one of the founding fathers of funk
With
The Help director Tate Taylor at the helm, and the likes of Viola and
Octavia starring together again, the movie is likely to be a hit.
And
comparisons to 2004’s Ray are not necessarily a bad thing. Jamie Foxx
won an Oscar for the film, which drew in $125million at the box office
on a $40million budget.
James died at the age of 73 on Christmas Day in 2006. Get On Up is due to be released August 1.
Living the high life: As well as lots of drama in the trailer, viewers see the joys of James' success story
Dream team: With The Help director Tate Taylor
at the helm and Viola and Octavia working together again, it's likely
the movie will be a hit
