The 55-year-old was taking part in a word association game with entertainment site Buzzfeed when she was asked how she felt about kale - one of the healthiest vegetables around.
The star wrote ‘gay’ to describe her feelings toward the cabbage-like product – outraging many fans with her flippant use of the word as an insult.
Controversy: Madonna described the vegetable kale as 'gay' on Tuesday during a word association game with website Buzzfeed
She also used the word to describe Russia’s president Vladimir Putin – who is openly opposed to homosexuality and has imposed stringent rules in his Eastern European
country.
Madonna previously blasted Putin for his ‘blatant intolerance of gay rights’, and revealed she had received death threats after performing in Russia in 2012.
But it seems her fight for gay rights slipped her mind when she dismissively used the word to describe a vegetable.
Outrage: Madonna's fans took to Twitter in their droves to moan about the singer's use of the word gay
Keeping up: The star also said the word 'gay'
was the first that popped into her mind when she was thinking about
Russia's president Putin
Spotted: The day after she played the game, Madonna was back at the gym in Hollywood wearing a 'vogue' cap
And when her fans got wind of the video, they were less-than-impressed with one fan saying, ‘She should know better.’Another, named Santi, seemed confused by Madonna’s misuse of the language, asking: ‘Did Madonna just try to use ‘gay’ as an insult or…?’
It seems Madge is keeping mum about the situation as she’s not directly addressed her fans’ questions on any form of social media.
It’s not the first time the self-confessed queen of pop had plunged herself into hot water over her choice of vocabulary.
Fighting words: Madonna landed in hot water in January after using
the N-word in a caption that accompanied a photo of her son, 13-year-old
Rocco Ritchie
Unapologetic: The offensive comment was taken
down minutes later and replaced with a profane message urging Madonna's
critics to get off her 'd*** haters'
The middle-aged pop star courted
controversy when she used the word ‘n***er’ to describe her 13-year-old
son Rocco on Instagram, in January. Madonna released a statement saying: ‘There's no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention...It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white.’
But the star was less tactful on her Instagram account, captioning her next picture: ‘Ok let me start this again. Get off my d—k haters.’
A representative for Madonna has been contacted.
Regretful: Madonna last night apologized on her Facebook and Twitter feeds for using the N-word on Instagram
