In the initial tweet, which the 31-year-old American actor has since deleted, Jared wrote: '"Sad" isn't the word I'd use to describe a 46 year old man throwing his life away to drugs. "Sensless" is move like it. "Stupid".
His words were met by abuse from Twitter users after his message was seen by million, following Hoffman's death on Sunday morning.

Among the comments was one from Kelly Marie Piercy, @kellympiercy, who wrote: 'Jared Padalecki; you dare tweet such insensitive things and tarnish the good Gilmore name! Shame on you bro.'
Another from Julieta Colás, @jujujulieta, said: 'Jared Padalecki, insulting the memory of one of this generation's greatest actors, 140 characters at a time. pic.twitter.com/zuDzPPdRI4'
mel @melissaashleyyy added: 'is anyone else as shocked as I am that jared padalecki said this bc wow'
Mike Salisbury, @Boy_from_school, summed up with: 'You know what I think is stupid Jared Padalecki? THAT SUPERNATURAL CONTINUES TO BE ON TELEVISION IN 2014.'

Padalecki, who is best known for his roles in TV series' Gilmore Girls and Supernatural, offered up an explanation following the tweet.
He, again, wrote on Twitter: 'I didnt mean PSH is stupid or that addiction isnt a reality. I simply meant I have a different definition of "tragedy".
'When I think "tragedy", I think of St Judes, of genocide, of articles I read in the paper. But, yes, either way, a death, is sad.'

Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, suffered a long
battle with drug addiction, which was known to the public, and even
checked himself into rehab in May last year. The actor who was best known for a number of standout film roles was found dead at his home on Sunday following a suspected drug overdose.
Investigators found eight empty bags stamped with 'Ace of Spades' and 'Ace of Hearts' inside the actor's Manhattan apartment, according to officials.

They usually contain a lethal mix of heroin laced with fentanyl - an opiate used to soothe the pain of cancer patients.
Known for his noted roles in The Talented Mr Ripley and Boogie Nights, among many others, Hoffman was currently filming for popular film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - Plutarch Heavensbee.
Meanwhile Padalecki and his wife Genevieve Cortese welcomed their second child in December.
The Supernatural star tweeted his fans that his partner had successfully given birth to baby boy, Shepherd, on December 22.
The 31-year-old actor, who also shares a 21-month-old son Thomas Colton with Genevieve, revealed that the child was born at home.
