The witching hour: Julia Roberts wears a gothic strapless gown for photo shoot on the beach

She played the evil magical step-mother to Snow White in Mirror Mirror, but Julia Roberts went for a far different bewitching look on Wednesday.
The Oscar-nominated actress wore a gothic strapless dress in black, that made her alabaster sink stand out under the cool California sunlight.
With her hair down in a tousled style, Julia, 46, brought an ethereal charm to the beach photo shoot.

Roberts had a team around her, making sure she looked perfect on film, with one stylist busily pinning her dress so it hugged her figure in all the right places.

But she didn't just pull a few seductive poses, as her winning smile came out after encouragement from the photographer, using an hand-held camera to capture her beauty.
Julia is used to being snapped, having starred in a number of fashion and beauty campaigns for Lancome's La vie est belle fragrance, and for L'Oreal, although the ads were pulled in the UK for the overuse of air-brushing.

The actress has made a big Hollywood comeback with the movie August: Osage County, which has landed her a third Oscar nomination.
Julia plays Barbara, the eldest daughter of Meryl Streep's pill-popping matriarch Violet, who returns home with her daughter and estranged husband after her father turns up dead.
The film - written by Tracy Letts and based on his Pulitzer Prize–winning play by the same name - features a stellar ensemble cast including Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Cooper and Dermot Mulroney.

The biggest draw for Julia to star in the film, was the chance to star opposite Meryl, who is also nominated for an Academy Award.
'I, like everyone,” Roberts told the Daily Telegraph, 'have only sat in the dark and watched in awe. To get to watch her up close and to see her be a real-life person, working really hard to be that great, it was a privilege.'
Barbara is a different sort of character than Julia is used to, and she has previously received OScar nods for her feisty roles as Vivian in Pretty Woman, and Erin in Erin Brockovich (her first win).
'It’s not more fun, really. I mean it was a dream to play this part,' the actress recalled. 'But it’s… it’s just so painful really. There’s no sport to it, it all comes from this agony. The truth of it is so deeply wounded that the fun quickly dissipates.'
