The 51-year-old comedian took a swipe at the 27-year-old Transformers star who recently announced via Twitter that he was 'retiring from all public life.'
Shia has been in the middle of a public plagiarism controversy since being accused in November of lifting material from graphic novelist Daniel Clowes without attribution.
Witty rebuke: Jim Carrey took a dig at actor Shia LaBeouf and his plagiarism scandal on Sunday during the Golden Globes Awards
He was presenting American Hustle for best motion picture when he took a verbal jab at Shia.
The Bruce Almighty star during his presentation offered the quote, 'Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.'
Strange behaviour: Shia, shown in April in New
York City, has admitted plagiarising a comic book artist's work and
recently announced his retirement 'from all public life'
He followed that up with his gibe.
'I believe it was Shia LaBeouf who said that. So young, so wise,' the Liar Liar star said sarcastically.
His remarks got scattered laughter from the audience at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Elder statesman: Jim has been around Hollywood long enough to take the younger generation to task
Shia tweeted on Friday about his retirement and blamed attacks on his 'artistic integrity' for his decision.
The Holes star has been issuing a series of apologetic tweets and has even hired skywriters to spell out his apologies over the skies of Los Angeles.
The sincerity of his apologies have been questioned though as Shia has plagiarised several of his apologies to Clowes.
Speaking out: Shia, 27, announced his news
of retirement on his Twitter page on Friday but it is unclear if it is
just another hoax
Shia in November
released his short film project Howard Cantour.com that was basded on
Clowes' graphic novella Justin M. Damiano without crediting the
inspiration for his short.Shia will next be seen playing Jerôme in Lars von Trier's controversial film Nymphomaniac.
He has also been filming the war movie Fury with Brad Pitt in England.
Sequel soon: Jim will return in Dumb and Dumber To later this year
