Julia was joined at the Television Critics Association panel discussion in Pasadena by her co-stars, along with director Ryan Murphy, best known for being the co-creator of Glee.
The HBO movie boasts an impressive cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons and Taylor Kitsch, who were all at the event.
Julia revealed that it took rather a long time to convince her to join the project, which is an adaptation of the Larry Kramer play.
The Pretty Woman star had been approached twice before for the role, and still wasn’t keen when Ryan asked her.

Julia will be playing Dr. Emma Brookner in the film, a physician who treated some of the first HIV-AIDS patients.
And she admitted that she had an ‘inability to fully understand who this character was,’ which led to her turning down the part.
But that all changed after Julia watched a documentary about polio, which Dr. Brookner suffered from during her childhood.
‘It unlocked the door to who this woman is to me and where her relentless, furious pursuit of correctness comes from,’ Julia said.

She then added: ‘It was just such a beautiful experience to get to play her.
‘Interestingly enough, my relationship with Ryan has provided me with such an incredible education. This is another stone on that path.’
Julia also commented on her shock at seeing Matt Bomer’s transformation, as he lost 40lbs for the character of Felix.
‘We all took a very small break [during production], and he came back half the person he was and twice the man!’ Julia said.
