'My family has experienced a lot of loss in their life and they've been so wonderful in being there for me and giving me the strength I need,' the 27-year-old actress said of her mum and dad, Marc and Edith Sarfati.
The brave brunette was writing songs for her first album, Louder, when she learned that 31-year-old Cory, who played Finn Hudson in the show, had died of a drugs and alcohol overdose in Vancouver, Canada, in July.
Lady in black: Lea Michele was spotted in New

degrees Fahrenheit
Lea, who was talking to People at the L'Oreal Women of Worth gala at the Pierre Hotel in New York on Tuesday evening, said the track she recorded at the time,
Cannonball, is 'more than just a song to me. It completely helped to lift me up at a time where I needed it.'
'Music can really help you in times of need, and that's what this song did for me and I hope that's what it does for others as well,' she added.
'I brought my dad to the studio and he cried the entire time. But for me it's been very empowering. I've used this song as a rock.'
Lea has dedicated two songs on her album to Cory - You're Mine and If You Say So.

Meanwhile, Lea wrapped up warm as she left her Big Apple hotel on a very chilly Wednesday morning, striding out in thigh-high black leather boots, after learning that show creator Ryan Murphy has invited all the original cast back for the show's 100th episode.
With temperatures down to just 43 degrees Fahrenheit, all that was visible of Lea under her layers of clothing was the lower portion of her beautiful face and her hands, with one wrapped around a hot beverage.

The fashionista was dressed head-to-toe in black. She donned black jeans under her boots that nearly met the bottom of her heavy, shawl-necked sheepskin jacket, which was augmented with shiny leather sleeves.
Lea wrapped a cosy scarf around her neck and chin, and pulled a wide-brimmed felt hat over her auburn tresses and low over her face, with her eyes hidden behind large dark glasses.
Ryan revealed the news about the Glee reunion in a series of Tweets on Tuesday, saying 'ALL The Glee Originals received invites today to be in our 100th episode!' followed up by RSVPs from Amber Riley, who has just won Dancing With The Stars, and Mark Salling.
Glee's 100th episode will air March 18 on Fox.
