The 57-year-old actor opened up about recently celebrating 25 years of marriage during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday.
'I'm not one to suck up to the audience, but the only thing we argue about is who loves each other more,' the actor said to loud cheers while promoting his new movie Saving Mr Banks.
The Forrest Gump star said he and his 57-year-old wife have postponed the anniversary celebration and are yet to figure out when it will take place.
'The only thing we argue about is who loves each
other more': Tom Hanks told Ellen on Tuesday that he and his wife Rita
Wilson celebrated their 25th anniversary not long ago
Tom met Rita in the very early 1980s on the set of the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies, in which Tom starred as a cross dressing advertising agent. Rita appearred in an episode about a video dating service.
However, their romance began to blossom when they were paired in the 1985 movie, Volunteers.
Undeniable chemistry: The 57-year-old actor and
Rita Wilson began their romance on the set of Volunteers in 1985, when
Tom was still married to actress Samantha Lewes.
Hooray for true love: The audience burst into applause when Tom announced his 25th anniversary
Nevertheless, he felt his chemistry with Rita was too strong to ignore, telling GQ magazine, 'Rita and I just looked at each other and — kaboing — that was that. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn’t be denied.'
Tom and Samantha divorced in 1987, and he married Rita a year later in April 1988.
Indescribable bond: The Oscar-award winning
actor told Oprah in 2001 that the love he shares with Rita has helped
him shape his on screen characters, such as Forrest Gump
The Oscar-winning actor claims his relationship with Rita has inspired him professionally, as told to Oprah in 2001.'I view my wife as my lover, and we have a bond that goes beyond words like wife or girlfriend or mother,' he said. 'For example, I was able to construct a number of things in Philadelphia [1993] because of my relationship with Rita.'
'The way my character felt about his lover is the way I feel about mine. The same was true when I played Forrest Gump, who loved Jenny. Without my connection with Rita, I don’t know how I would’ve been able to connect with what Forrest was going through.'
Love is a drug: Rita described to Piers Morgan
in 2012 a special moment she shared with Tom, when a feeling of love
struck her powerfully
'Ill never forget, we were standing on the corner of 57th and 5th in New York, or 58th and 5th. We were holding hands, and we were waiting for the traffic light to change. And he looked at me and he said, "You know, I just want you to know, that you never have to change anything about who you are in order to be with me."'
'Literally, a wave of — if love is a feeling, or a cellular thing that happens to your body, it went through me, and that’s pretty much who he is, and how he’s been.'
Merry Christmas: Ellen gifted Tom with a red sweater, depicting a scene from Merry Christmas Charlie Brown
Tom has two children from his previous marriage with Samantha: Colin, 34, and Elizabeth, 31.
Colin Hanks played Father Gill, a young Roman Catholic priest in season two of Mad Men.
Colin has given his father two granddaughters: Olivia Jane, 3, and Charlotte, born this June.
Ringing in the holidays: Tom joked that the Christmas season only starts when one has watched Merry Christmas Charlie Brown
He proved himself pretty hilarious as well when jesting about the Christmas sweater Ellen gifted him - red with a Merry Christmas Charlie Brown scene framed in sparkling trim.
'You know what this sweater represents?' Tom said. 'Christmas time - the season does not officially start until you have watched Merry Christmas Charlie Brown.'
Zooming around the rink: Tom and Ellen began to
mime the opening of Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, which features the
characters ice skating
The Castaway actor then proceeded to 'ice skate' across the wooden floor of the stage - quite gracefully - while joined by Ellen, in miming the beginning of the popular holiday children's program.
He then pretended to fly across the room and crash land on the sofa on which he was originally seated, flailing his arms and legs.
Weeee! Tom and and Ellen shared some silly moments on the set of the Ellen Degeneres Show on Tuesday
Tom is currently promoting his film, Saving Mr. Banks, a biographical comedy-drama centred on the pre-production of the 1964 Walt Disney Studios film, Marry Poppins.
Tom plays Walt Disney.
Saving Mr. Banks will be released theatrically in the United States on December 13 in limited release and in wide release on December 20.
Ouch! The Forrest Gump actor pretended to fly across the room and crash land on the sofa, while flailing his arms and legs
Only human: Tom endeared himself to the audience by acting out a giant blunder
