But Jennifer Hudson proved that she doesn't care what the guidelines are in not one but two sexy outfits at the Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas on Friday.
The 32-year-old
former American Idol contestant began the night in a barely-there print
dress as she showed off her fabulous figure on the red carpet. By the
time she took to the stage for her performance, she had gone more rock
'n' roll in leather and spikes.

Weight loss wonder: Having dropped over 80 pounds on Weight Watchers, Jennifer is no doubt excited to show off her figure
Having dropped over 80lbs on Weight Watchers despite giving birth to son, David, in August 2009, Jennifer is no doubt proud of her new physique.
The Oscar winning actress' graphic black, cream and gold dress by Balmain had long sleeves but dipped deep into her bustline and rose high up her thigh, with a black belt nipping her narrow waist in.
She
enhanced the dramatic look with cat eye make-up, Yves Saint Laurent
studded lace-up platform boots and her hair puffed up in a severe
side-parting.
Edgy: Jennifer's daring style has developed as much as her musical talent
Her next show-stopping costume was a black leather mini-skirt, fishnet tights and yet another pair of high spiked heels.
A simple white vest top, huge chunky necklace and layers of bracelets completed the rock diva look.
For her energetic performance, the Dreamgirls star pranced across the stage with her microphone firmly in-hand, before she was joined by Evelyn 'Champagne' King for a duet.

'What gets hard is when I get underweight, or under my goal weight, and then I have to eat, eat, eat,' revealed the Weight Watchers spokesperson at their 50th anniversary celebration last March.
'But you don’t want to lose control because you stopped checking points to maintain your weight. So it actually gets harder when you have to let your guard down,' she explained.
'And that’s part of keeping the weight off - okay, how can I get back to my target weight, and let go, and not fall off the plan? The key is not to fall off the plan, to trust the plan and continue to do it. It’s tricky.'
Pale lace: Toni Braxton wore a long nude-coloured gown with a dramatic train that swept down the red carpet
Red and white: Gladys Knight went for bright
crimson in a flair satin dress, while Malinda Williams was a white lady
with black piping
Hudson was one of the talented performers at the fifth annual Soul Train Awards at the Orleans Arena, where she was joined by a collection of musical stars.
Despite declaring bankruptcy and losing the rights to 27 of her songs earlier this year, Toni Braxton, 45, was demure in a long flesh-coloured lace gown.
Singer Gladys Knight opted for bright red satin in a fun knee-skimming dress, while actress Malinda Williams wore a cleavage-plunging white gown with chic black piping.
Long and short: Destiny's Child singer Michelle
Williams wore a conservative-length green floral dress, while Towanda
Braxton let her legs do the talking in a sheer jumpsuit
See-through: The sparkles on Ashanti's dress
covered all the essential areas, while Vanilla Ice was a surprise guest
in jeans, a suit jacket and a white baseball cap
Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams amped up the sophistication, however, in a green floral dress that reached mid-shin and her hair perfectly straightened.
Ashanti's see-through dress could have been overly-revealing, but thankfully all the essential areas were covered with a sparkly detail that reflected the light from the countless flashing cameras.
Fortunately not flashing lots of flesh was rapper Vanilla Ice, who downplayed his former cartoonish style in jeans, a suit jacket and white baseball cap.
Queen of the red carpet: Ten-time Grammy Award-winning singer Chaka Khan looked like true R&B royalty in black and gold
Chatty lady: Talk show host Wendy Williams held
her microphone on stage as she hugged Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of BET Debra L. Lee
After winning 10 Grammy Awards, R&B queen Chaka Khan is well used to the red carpet and dominated the occasion in a black dress and gold jewelry.
Talk show host Wendy Williams was eager to talk to everyone as she posed on stage with Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET, Debra L. Lee.
