12 Years A Slave is based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a New York resident who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841 before being rescued 12 years later.
Solomon has a chance meeting with Brad Pitt's character, a Canadian abolitionist, which ultimately changes the path of his life.
Northup faces cruelty while he encounters some kindness and guidance from Pitt's Canadian character Bass and from other slaves on his plantation.
12 Years A Slave stars Michael Fassbender as Edwin Epps and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup

The audience is transported back to the mid 19th century slave era where viewers see all of the cruelty that abounded during that time.
Bass would deliver letters to Northup’s wife that would start the legal process of earning him his freedom.
Pitt is hoping that it will be among next year's Oscar contenders and with such a stellar cast and powerful story it looks like he might be in with a shot.
12 Years A Slave hits select theaters on Friday, October 18.
