And so recent pictures of Haley Joel Osment may come as a surprise to fans.
While the 25-year-old actor is still recognisable as the adorable kid from The Sixth Sense, he has definitely filled out since his big break.
All grown up: The Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel
Osment is still recognisable as the adorable child star he once was but
has definitely filled out
Osment attended a screening of the movie Nebraska in New York on Thursday night where he put his child star past firmly behind him.
Dressed in a light grey blazer with a grey shirt and dark trousers, the affable actor chatted happily with a female friend.
The way he was: Haley shot to fame as the cute child who could see dead people in The Sixth Sense
The movie tells the story of a father and son who trek from Montana to Nebraska to claim prize money. Along the way they meet up with friends, relatives and acquaintances to whom the father owes cash.
Osment was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense and although he went on to make some other movies including Pay It Forward and A.I. Artificial Intelligence he has maintained a low profile since.
However, he did cause shockwaves in 2006 when he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and possession of marijuana following a car crash.
The star broke a rib and hurt his shoulder in the smash in Los Angeles - which left his vehicle flipped over on its roof.
He pleaded no contest to one count each of misdemeanour DUI and misdemeanour drug possession and was sentenced to three years’ probation, 60 hours in an alcohol rehabilitation and education programme and fined $1500.
Talented: Haley Joel Osment shot to fame in The Sixth Sense before starring in Pay It Forward and A.I. Artificial Intelligence
In 2011 he won rave reviews for starring in John Logan's Tony Award-winning drama Red at the Suzanne Roberts Theater in Philadelphia.
The play followed artist Mark Rothko as he constructed his most famous work alongside his assistant Ken- played by Osment.
Avoiding the child star curse: Apart from one
incident in 2006 where he pleaded no contest to DUI, Haley Joel has
managed to avoid the curse of the former child stars and appears to live
a relatively normal life
Haley garnered winning reviews for his performance, with the Philly Post saying that he and his co-star Stephen Rowe had 'a perfectly uncomfortable chemistry that gives the play life,' and calling Osment 'a natural' on stage.
Speaking about the play, Osment said: 'I never got a chance to see Red when it was on Broadway but I read it before this production.
Youthful: Although it's been 14 years since his big break, Osment has managed to retain her cherubic looks
'On top of having great characters, it has art history. The characters add a lot of depth to it because they feel so strongly about art.
'It is a 90-minute show and it goes fast. I've always enjoyed one act plays because it allows the storyline to go straight through. With this show, the dialogue is great and the characters are strong.'
Award nominated: Haley was nominated for an
Oscar for his turn as the troubled young boy in The Sixth Sense opposite
Bruce Willis in 1999
