First look: Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis takes on iconic role of Annie in Jay Z's modern-day re-make

She's already broken records for being the youngest ever female to be nominated for an Academy Award, but now Quvenzhane Wallis is breaking even more new ground - as a modern-day Annie.
The acclaimed star, who rose to fame for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild, will play the orphan character alongside Cameron Diaz.
The 40 year-old star will take on the iconic role of Miss Hannigan in the upcoming remake.

Spotted filming scenes while on location in Harlem, New York, the ten year-old performer is seen wearing grey leggings and a pink fleece top.

Riding around on a push-bike sponsored by high-street bank Citi, the NY equivalent of London's 'Boris Bikes', the new pictures show a more modern, urban approach to the classic musical.

That said, some characteristics of the original film remain in tact.
Namely, Wallis' hair - which is deliberately styled in loose curls as a reference to the original 1982 hit, which starred Aileen Marie Quinn in the leading role.
Acclaimed actor Jamie Foxx will also star in the project as Daddy Warbucks.
Will Smith and Jay Z will be directing the movie - which is set to be released Christmas 2014 - while acclaimed director Will Gluck is also on board.

Despite her age, Quvenzhane has already had her fair share of industry spats.
In February, E! Fashion Police co-host Kelly Osbourne was branded 'stupid' for failing to use the young actress' full name during the channel's Oscar night coverage.
One disgusted viewer posted: 'It is rude, unprofessional and borderline racist to not even try to pronounce her name properly.'
Another tweeted: 'Not learning her name is racist. Calling her Annie is racist. Saying she says her name the best is racist.'
