Princess Mary evacuated from Syrian refugee camp

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark was evacuated from a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, after a demonstration among the migrants broke out during her visit.

Mary, a patron of the United Nations Population Fund, was reportedly nearing the end of her visit to the Zaatari Refugee Camp, an hour from the Jordanian capital, when security was alerted that the Danish royal had to be evacuated for her own safety.

A protest that was deemed aggressive had broken out among the migrants, who were reacting to Wednesday's nerve gas attacks in Syria.

During her emotional visit, Mary walked around the camp and met with refugees who told her their tales
of grief. The beautiful royal played with children and admired their drawings, and was seen giving tender hugs to those around her.

After her visit, Mary spoke to the press about her impressions, and it was while she was giving her interview that the demonstration broke out. Fortunately for the camp, the situation did not reach a dangerous level but Mary was still whisked away in an official car.

Through her three-day visit to Jordan, Mary was hoping to raise awareness about the Syrian crisis and the terrible living conditions of the millions of refugees that have poured into neighbouring Jordan. An estimated 120,000 refugees live in the Zaatari camp.

Mary, a keen advocate of humanitarian issues, also founded The Mary Foundation in 2007, which campaigns for the improvement of the lives of women, children and families.
