Dale Bolinger, 57, went to his local Homebase and bought the axe hours before he was due to meet the teen in September 2012.
He then went to Ashford International rail station, Kent, to meet the girl - who is only known by her online profile name Eva - but she failed to turn up.
Bolinger’s disturbing plan was uncovered by the FBI who found him chatting about rape, murder and cannibalism on the internet calling himself meatmarketman.
His online conversations on a website called Dark Fetish Network included boasts he had already eaten a 39-year-old woman and a five- year-old child, a court heard.
Bolinger also wrote about how meat from a child was more tender - and how he got sexual gratification from his fantasies about cannibalism, jurors were told.

with, kill and eat
Officers then raided his home in Canterbury and found a photo of him posing with an
axe in front of a mirror, the court heard.
Bolinger is on trial at Canterbury Crown Court accused of arranging to meet an underage girl and grooming, which he denies.
Opening the case, prosecutor Martin Yale said: 'Dark Fetish Network is a website for those who fantasize about various things, including cannibalism.
'It is the Crown’s case that one of the users that Bolinger befriended on DFN was someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.
'And having discussed with her his fantasies in relation to her on more than one occasion, made arrangements to meet her with the intention of committing a sexual offence on her.'
The jury heard how the girl told Bolinger she was a Mexican living in Germany after they met online.
At first she told Bolinger she was 16 - but then told him over the internet she was 14.
Mr Yale said they talked about meeting in Kent where she would go under the name Eva Nada.
The prosecutor claimed Bolinger told her of the 'sorts of sexual acts he would perform on her both before and after her death'.
He added that they allegedly talked about her death and 'she responded that she would like this to happen.'
The nurse's plan was uncovered by the FBI - who
found him posting about murder, rape and cannibalism on a site called
Dark Fetish Network. The organisation then alerted British police who
arrested the man last year
The jury heard that Bolinger used a picture of model Naomi Campbell on his Dark Fetish Network profile.
Mr Yale described some of the messages Bolinger sent the girl - including one which said he wanted to 'remove' her 'sweet' head.
Later in that message he said the idea of making love with the teen before eating her was a 'turn-on'.
One lengthy exchange between the pair read out in court included Bolinger asking Eva if she wanted to be 'beheaded' to which she replied: 'I need a man, real one to do it.'
Bolinger then described how he would do the act, saying he could show her the pose he would adopt to behead her.
On repeated occasions throughout the exchange, Bolinger asks her 'so you really want to be beheaded.'
Later, the pair discuss where and when they would be able to meet - with the man saying: 'Great, I can meet you at Ashford International train station and take you home to kill you. It can be that easy.'
Bolinger then describes his plan to meet the teenager and take her to his house, before stripping her and beheading her.
In the exchange, he then says he 'doesn't like waste' and so would eat her in 'many different ways'.
After hearing of his plan Eva tells him: 'I am almost crying of desire.' (sic)
Another message read: 'I’ve been called a very generous lover and I’d be very generous to you before I prepped you for the table.'
Mr. Yale said: 'Bolinger discussed buying an axe and referred her to pictures of axes on the Internet and they discussed them.'

Prosecutor Martin Yale
At 8.20 am on September 17 2012,
Bolinger is alleged to have used his debit card to buy an axe from
Homebase in Broadstairs, Kent.Prosecutor Martin Yale
The jury today was shown a picture of the axe he allegedly bought at the shop.
Later the same day at 22.57 he told the 14-year-old: 'Got the axe, you ready to get that train?'
Mr. Yale said: 'It is apparent that his intention when he travelled to Ashford International Station was that he would meet 14-year-old Eva and a sexual offence would take place.
'However, Eva did not arrive, something about which he challenged her in the final entries of the Eva Gonza Chat Log the following afternoon.'
Mr. Yale said Bolinger’s mobile phone records showed he was in the Ashford area between 11.56 and 12.08 on the morning he was due to meet the girl.
Bolinger was arrested after an investigation by the FBI in New York in September 2012 into online chats between people discussing 'amongst other things raping, killing and cannibalising women'.
Mr Yale said: 'One of the email addresses that featured in the FBI enquiry was meatmarketman@rocketmail.com.
'The FBI obtained information from Yahoo and it transpired that the email account was being accessed via an IP address in Kent.
'That information was then provided to Kent Police so that they could trace the user. Investigations revealed that the user was Dale Bolinger.'
Bolinger was planning to meet with Eva - who he
met online - at Ashford International Station (pictured), but she failed
to show up. He denies arranging to meet an underage girl and grooming
The FBI then provided Kent Police with a disc of the Chat logs involving Bolinger containing conversations 'making graphic reference to sexual abuse, murder and cannibalism of women and children of a wide range of ages, including a baby.'
Bolinger's profile on the site listed his interests as 'cannibalism, mainly the hunting and preparation of young but sometime not so young women', it is alleged.
The profile also said Bolinger had lots of recipes he wanted to try and that he was into bondage, the court heard.
Mr Yale continued: 'There were discussions about how much more tender the meat is from children.
'During some of the conversations, Bolinger comments about sexual arousal, clearly showing that he received sexual gratification from his fantasies about cannibalism.
'During the Chat logs Bolinger also claimed to have eaten a 39 year old black woman and a five year old child and images of females were clearly being exchanged with other users.'
Bolinger told one user that he would use his victim's head as a table decoration while he ate the meat from their body, the jury was told.
Bolinger also told another user he wished to eat to 'keep succulent', it is alleged.
Kent police detective Constable Nicola Griffith told the court that the FBI passed chat logs to Kent Police containing conversations Bolinger had with people on DFN.
When she looked at the website she saw chat groups entitled beheading, cannibalism and asphyxiation, the court heard.
Earlier, the jury was told how Bolinger has already pleaded guilty to an offence of administering a poison or noxious substance 'with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy' on a woman in July 2 2010.
The instance involved him putting a cloth soaked in dry cleaning fluid over a female friend’s mouth.
Mr. Yale said that Bolinger had 'taken his fantasies beyond the Chatroom' on one previous occasion.
'In February this year he admitted an offence involving putting a cloth soaked in dry cleaning fluid over a woman’s mouth - and later boasted in the Chat Logs of administering Chloroform to women.'
The trial, which is expected to last three days, continues.
