Adam Sandler shows his serious side as he steps into his role as a shoe repairman on set of The Cobbler

He started out in movies making people laugh, but in recent years Adam Sandler's career has taken a more dramatic turn.
The 47-year-old actor looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders as he beat a solitary path on the New York City set of the The Cobbler on Monday.
Alas, the circles beneath Sandler's eyes and the five o'clock shadow on his cheeks was perhaps part of his role as a shoe repairman who, strangely enough, has the power to metaphysically step into the lives of people whose shoes he fixes.

Adam was bundled up against the 50-degree F weather in a grey overcoat, beige trousers, and trainers, as well as a blue shirt and white undershirt, a red knit scarf
adding a flash of colour to his otherwise solemn ensemble.
The former stand-up comic looked like he was getting into his character while wearing the deepest of concerned expressions.
The indie drama is budgeted in the $10 million range and is being directed by Tom McCarthy, who has won critical acclaim for independent gems The Station Agent and The Visitor.

World-weary: Adam looked on the tired side but perhaps that was all for the scene

McCarthy, who also wrote the screenplay, was able to lure Sandler to the role before the star begins the dark suburban drama Men, Women & Children for director Ivan Reitman later this year.
For those who miss the wise-cracking funny guy of such comedies as Happy Gilmore and Grown Ups, consolation is on the way.
Adam recently wrapped the comedy Blended co-starring Drew Barrymore and the film is due to bow in US theatres on May 23, 2014.
Not so funny: Adam's made a career out of comedies, but has shown quite a flair for drama in recent years too

The film centres around a man and woman who, after a bad blind date, find themselves thrown together at a family resort where their attraction grows and their respective kids benefit from the blossoming relationship.
Adam and Drew's onscreen chemistry goes way back - they previously starred in 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer.
His previous comedy, 2011's Jack And Jill, was met with groans from the critics.
'I know what they're writing about me,' Adam told The Independent in August. 'I could almost write the piece for them by now.'
The nibbler: Those pickles must have tasted yummy and Adam was lucky to have a jarful

'But then remember that I didn't get into movies to please the critics. I got into it to make people laugh and have fun with my friends,' he added.
In real life, Sandler has been married to his wife Jackie for 10 years and they are parents to two daughters, Sunny, five, and Sadie, seven.
They live in Los Angeles and needless to say, he's totally serious when it comes to fatherhood.
Adam continued: 'When I first started out in this game, I just didn't understand why any director or actor I worked with would suddenly take off and say, "I gotta go, I gotta go and see my kid in Little League in half an hour."
'I would be like: "Dude, are you crazy? This is a movie we're making." Now of course, all I can think about is: "Yes later, everyone. My child is about to take her first poop."'
Family man: Adam relishes life as a father and has two daughters, Sunny, five, and Sadie, seven, with wife Jackie; the family is pictured in 2011 as he received his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame
