But dad was happy to help while Cruz skipped ahead in bare feet - something he could only get away with at this time of year in California.
As a touching tribute to his former football ace father Cruz wore a blue and neon green version his dad's former strip with his name and number 23 plain to see as he hopped in a car.

David wore blue jeans, red and blue Adidas trainers and a T-shirt that showed off his tattoos.
Now the retired footballer has more time on his hands to focus on his children, and other ventures.
On Monday it was revealed Beckham will host a ground breaking global digital book signing.
The event, created to coincide with the launch of his new book, will bring fans together from around the world on Wednesday October 30, and will be broadcast live to his millions of fans on Facebook.
For the first time ever David will use innovative technology from his base in London to provide lucky fans with a personalised digital signature at locations in New York, and Sao Paulo.
Those who can’t be present in person can contribute questions to a live Q&A through their computer.
David said of the venture: 'I always like innovative and original ideas. What has been created is ambitious but it should be a fantastic event.
'I
love the interaction with my fans but not only will I be able to do
this in London, I will be able to sign for them in locations across the
world."'

David and Victoria recently sold their Hertfordshire family, Beckingham Palace for £12 million.
David was said to be particularly sad to leave the home where the family have so many happy memories, but the move is part of a bigger practical plan for the family's future.
The couple are allegedly pooling the cash from the property as well as from the sale of a number of their luxury cars, to buy a £45 million mansion in central London.
The family hope to spend the school year in the UK, while making sure they get to enjoy the Californian sun during their kids' holiday.
