The media mogul made headlines when it was revealed last month that he was having a baby at 53 with his friend's estranged wife.
While the British star acknowledges it's a 'juicy story' and 'can't blame the media' for the intense interest surrounding the couple, he tells talkshow host Ellen Degeneres that he is 'actually happier than ever'.
In the hot seat! In an interview that airs on
Tuesday, Simon Cowell sat down with Elle Degeneres, who relentlessly
hounded him on the sex of his baby with girlfriend Lauren Silverman
In an interview that airs in the States on Tuesday, the X Factor USA judge sits down for
a somewhat candid chat with the comedian, who tries - but fails - to get him to confirm the gender of his baby.
'And it’s a boy?' the 55-year-old asks.
'You’ll have to wait and see,' Simon replies.
'But it’s a boy,' she continues.
'Well, there are a lot of boys in my family so the odds are...' he hints.
'Right, that it’s going to be a boy. And so what’s his name?' she presses, to which he simply laughs as their banter continues, before later adding, 'I'll tell you later.'
'It’s going to be a boy': Ellen tried to trick
the star into revealing baby Cowell's sex, even presenting him with
matching mini-me clothing
'I think she found it very uncomfortable': The
53-year-old was joined by new X Factor judge Kelly Rowland as he
discussed the reason behind Britney Spears' exit from the show
Ellen questions the star about his reaction to the surprise news that he's going to be a dad, to which Simon responds that he's feeling great about the prospect despite the initial public scrutiny.
'Oh my god, this is exciting and this is going to be a bit of a nightmare for the next few weeks - because everyone knows it was well documented,' he says. 'It was kind of uncomfortable, you know, the situation.
'But these things happen and everything is kind of calm now and I’m happy. I’m actually happier than I’ve ever been.'
Asking how Lauren is coping with the very public situation, Simon says the 36-year-old is 'in a really good place'.
'I never thought I'd say this: congratulations!'
The star sat down with old friend Jay Leno for an interview on The
Tonight Show on Friday, where he was congratulated on his exciting baby
news
'I obviously can’t blame the media - it was kind of what I call a juicy story,' he says. 'But there was a lot of stuff that was said about her: that she trapped me and that she’s a gold-digger. It's absolute nonsense. She’s a great girl but, like I said, it was awkward because of the circumstances.'
Ellen soon has the dad-to-be in hysterics when she presents him with a mini-me outfit for his 'son'.
The jeans and white v-neck top are the spitting image of Cowell's signature style, while she also tosses in tiny father and son matching black round-neck tees for good measure.
New X Factor judge Kelly Rowland also joined her boss on the couch as the pair talked about the show's highly-anticipated upcoming premiere.
Not letting up: Just like Ellen, Jay pushed
Simon to reveal the gender of his baby, even asking, 'Gimme a clue: does
it have testicles?'
Quizzing Simon on why Britney Spears got the boot, Ellen stumbled as she attempted to find just the right way of posing the question.
'Was that something that... How did that happen initially? Why did you go this will be right for the show?' she asked.
'I think if I’m being honest with you, Ellen, there was a time I think everyone was trying to up themselves in terms of who could find the biggest known star to be on a panel,' he explained. 'And in terms of a pop singer? Jennifer Lopez and the other one on The Voice... I can't remember. Blondie. Christina [Aguilera]. And we said, “We’ll take Britney”. She was fine, but I think she found it very uncomfortable.'
'Yeah, she’s not a big talker,' Ellen replied.
'I didn’t realise that!' Simon admitted. 'I kind of booked someone who couldn’t talk, which is a bit of a problem when you want someone to judge.
His lips are sealed! Simon would only confirm
that the child is 'One of the two' - either a boy or girl - though he
admitted, 'I do know what it is
'She wasn’t comfortable being negative, she didn’t like it when the contestants spoke back to her, so she was just uncomfortable. I liked her. So we decided to change it this year and I thought I’ll work with three girls because I like working with girls.'
Meanwhile, Simon continued to receive more well-wishes from his celebrity pals as he appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Friday.
'I've known you what, 12 or 15 years? I never thought I'd say this: congratulations! You're going to be a dad! That's amazing!' veteran talkshow host Leno gushed.
'Am I? Yeah, that was a bit of a shocker. When you first get the call, it's like, OK, put the phone down, gulp. And then I got used to the idea. The circumstances were a bit awkward...' Simon said as he pulled an hilarious facial expression that summed up the awkwardness perfectly.
'Oh what a life!' Comedian Adam Carolla couldn't help having a good-natured dig at the father-to-be
'But everything's fine now and I'm happy and she's [Lauren] adorable,' he added.
Fellow guest, comedian Adam Carolla, couldn't resist giving the notorious lothario a bit of a dig, though it was all in good spirits and the 53-year-old enjoyed a good laugh at his own expense.
'The revolving door of hot stepmoms coming through... Oh what a life!' Adam teased the father-to-be.
Still remaining coy on whether baby Cowell is a boy or girl, the star would only confirm that it's, 'One of the two.'
'Gimme a clue: does it have testicles?' Jay pressed.
Come on, just between you and me...: Jay leaned
in for a conspiratorial quiet chat with his longtime friend during the
commercial breaks
'That would kind of be giving it away,' the Brit replied, to which the host was quick to respond, 'Well not in LA!'
While he managed not to spill the closely-guarded secret, Cowell admitted, 'I do know what it is,' before talking about his hopes for his offspring.
'If it's a boy, I kind of hope he turns out like me as I was older, not when I was child - cause when I was a child I was obnoxious,' he laughed.
