The First Lady showed off her new look on Wednesday during a speech at a film screening in Washington. Her wavy tresses had been swept to the side and been the new highlights subtly framed her face.
Her 'do was complemented by a navy Tracy Reese dress with a bright red floral print at The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights film event in Washington.
Talking to Rachel Ray, she put the fringe down to a "mid-life crisis".
"This is my mid-life crisis, the bands," she said. "I couldn't get a sports car, they won't let me bungee jump, so instead, I cut my bangs."
She later revealed that the fringe was proving difficult to manage. "Bangs are a day-by-day proposition," she said during an interview with Entertainment tonight.
"They're starting to grow out, get a little irritating."
Earlier this month, Michelle gently poked fun at her husband Barack as he marked his 52nd birthday. The First Lady took to her official Twitter account to celebrate the President's special day in a message sent out to her 450,000 followers.
"Happy birthday Barack!" she wrote. "Your hair's a little grayer, but I love you more than ever."
Her tweet was accompanied by a sweet black and white photo of the Obamas as a young couple, relaxing together on a sofa.
Barack and Michelle have been happily married for 20 years now, and are proud parents to two daughters, Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12.
